How the ranked ELO system works
Ranked RISK does not score the game as one single result — it scores it as a set of head-to-head duels against every opponent in the lobby. Everyone you finish above counts as a duel you won; everyone who finishes above you counts as a duel you lost. Only placement matters: troops, kills and how you got there are irrelevant.
Each duel is scored with the classic ELO expectation formula, using a log factor of 40 000. Your expected chance of beating one opponent is:
E = 1 / (1 + 10(their points − your points) / 40000)
Equal ratings give a 50% expectation. Being 12 000 points ahead (roughly one whole tier) makes you about a 67% favourite in that duel — so the formula expects you to finish above that player two games out of three.
Your total change is the sum over all duels: K × (duels won − expected wins), where the K-factor depends on the lobby size and is split evenly across the duels:
| Lobby size | K-factor | Points per duel (K ÷ opponents) |
|---|---|---|
| 2 players | 1600 | 1600 |
| 3 players | 2120 | 1060 |
| 4 players | 2360 | 787 |
| 5 players | 2560 | 640 |
| 6 players | 2720 | 544 |
Why "top X" guarantees you points
Because only the number of opponents you beat matters, every lobby has a fixed break-even point: add up your expected wins against each opponent, and you gain points whenever you beat more opponents than that total. In a 6-player lobby against opponents of your own strength the expected total is 2.5 duels, so a top-3 finish always gains points and 4th or worse always loses — every placement above the break-even is a guaranteed plus, no matter how strong the players you finished behind were.
The break-even shifts with the lobby: if the lobby is rated above you, the formula expects less from you, and even a mid placement can be worth points. If you are the highest rated player in the lobby, you might need a top-2 finish — or an outright win — to avoid losing points. Enter your lobby above and the calculator shows the exact placement you need. That is the practical takeaway for climbing: pick your fights so that the placements you can realistically reach are above the lobby's break-even — surviving into the top half of a lobby of equals is always progress, while a risky all-in for 1st in a lobby rated below you can cost more than it wins.
