Every active player falls into exactly one of three groups: new active players played their first recorded game that year, returning players were also active the year before, and comebacks played in an earlier year, sat out the previous one, and came back — so the three columns sum to the active player count.

About this data

Recomputed nightly from the Friends of Risk database; the current month is excluded from charts until complete.
2023 games come from a manually imported tournament archive — many participants there never registered on the site, which is why 2023 shows thousands of active players but very few games each.
Eventmanager (tournament and signup tracking) has data from July 2024; earlier tournament sizes are measured from game appearances.
Twitch tracking started October 2023 (20-minute samples of live channels); YouTube tracking started March 2023 (daily view/subscriber deltas per channel).
Leaderboard ranks are taken from the daily Sabr snapshot at each month's start; ELO ranks are reconstructed from the full match log. Gaps mean no snapshot exists for that month.
